Beijing Leo Courtyard

Built between the late Ming Dynasty and the early Qing Dynasty, so far Leo Courtyard has had a history of more than 300 years and is still in good condition. Characterized by the architectural styles of the Ming and Qing Dynasties, it has two quadrangle courtyards surrounded by two-storey wooden buildings in four directions respectively in the front and the back, creating primitive, quiet and elegant atmosphere. With the fall of such ancient commercial districts as Forbidden City, Qianmen and Dashilar, Shanglinxian Inn, one of the eight Famous Alleys (Ba Da Hu Tong) well known throughout the world, has become the most popular top-grade community and entertainment center among the high society.

In history, innumerable celebrities used to be regular customers of the inn where they have left numerous historical traces and stories about them have been passed from one generation to another. In the late Qing Dynasty, Sai Jinhua (1872-1936), a chivalrous prostitute well known to every Beijinger, used to stay at the inn to set up the Jinhua Troupe and established the Jinhua Entertainment Club. In the early period of the Republic of China (November 1915), she tactfully helped General Cai E, the Major General and Yunnan Provincial Governor of the Yuan Shikai government, successfully flee Beijing at the cost of sacrificing herself. She has made a significant contribution to the great republican cause and the story about the brave deeds of this beautiful woman has been widespread
